Throw a second NIC into the HP, and then link the Compaq to that. After you reboot, WinXP will be confused for a minute or so as to where its Internet connection actually is and what the Compaq is up to, but once it straightens that out, they should talk to each other with fewer problems. In fact, you can accellerate that process by assigning a static IP on the Compaq and on the HP's second NIC.
