I have no true clue but Nvidia is having trouble in Counter Strike Source thru Half Life 2. Trouble with the old driver & the new beta drivers too. So you could try an older driver that could fix your problem.

If you think its a PSU problem you could under clock the video card & see if that fix's the problem.

Do not try this as this could be very bad, but I wonder if the second PSU trick (normaly powers all drives & fans to save main power for CPU & GPU) could work on just a video card ?. As I have no clue how they are wired & remember that it works somewhat without the xtra plug so may end up with a big short. The old AT PSU will work but ATX PSU's needs to be jumped to power up/on.
BTW I have a 6800 GT TDH with 12 pipelines not your 16 pipes & I dont have the xtra power plug.
