Remember that we are nearing the limits & little bunny steps must be taken now. Ya intel has lots of money to throw into R&D, 90 to 65 nm ? I think. The mega hertz race is over because of the heat, so srinking it more will compact the heat even more & that cant be good for smaller trace lines.
There really have been no new break thru's in the way the traces are made & a way to get rid of the heat & the material that is used. The makers of all these IC's parts have been creative & have broken many barriers time & time again. So myself I think its great what has been done & it looks like they will keep on doing it to. Back in the days when I started electronic's a million transistors in one package was a dream along ways away for the future & we have surpassed that by along shot. Anyways AMD proved you dont need speed to be fast & the future will surprize us again.
