I've actually done that once with a SuSE 9 installation, and it was smart enough to detect the new hardware and reconfigure. I've not tried it with Fedora, though.

As a complete guess, I suppose that if it can NOT automatically reconfigure, you will get a kernel panic and the system will hang fairly early in the boot-up cycle.
