I can explain a crossover cable. When you have only two computers in a LAN setup you do not need a hub or a switch as you can use a crossover cable. This cable is also sometimes used between the modem & (hub or switch). Thou a hub or switch can have a push button switch that does the crossover for you. The crossover works by combining the (data out) line from one computer to the (data in) line on the second computer & visa versa.
