So this is a coaxial adapter plug? Very likely the tip (center) is positive and the outside (shield) is negative. Generally that's a safety convention which a laptop manufacturer is more likely to follow, although obviously you're on your own to find out. Hopefully, the laptop maker was bright enough to also include a couple diodes to protect against reverse polarity, but no guarantees.

Another possibility might be to find other owners of similar notebook models and see if their AC pack shows a consistent polarity.

One possible last-resort way would be to series a 250mA (1/4 A)fast-blow fuse with the "positive" lead from the 12V plug and then briefly 'touch' power to the laptop plug. If the charging indicator light comes on, you have correct orientation (although you may still blow the fuse).
