I'd say you have a faulty cable at least. That's the first thing I would check, whether there are any nicks in the cable or connector where lines get shorted.

The second possiblity could be a power supply problem as you already suggested yourself. The third possibility is that there is a problem with the controller and from what you write, regardless of whatever caused the problem, there is a high likely hood that the controller got toasted in the wake of the other HDD failures.
