Fortunately, I have a very simple equation when it comes to computers; I want
what runs the latest games (DOOM III, Half Life II, Star Wars: Galaxies, etc.)
the fastest, period. I rarely run multiple programs at once that require any
significant processing power. And I certainly don't run anything in the background
while I'm playing a game.

So until they come out with quality games that make real use of
dual cores (which will be a good awhile), high-end Athlon 64's are the only way to go.

But if for some reason you want to burn a CD, use Photoshop, and run 3D Studio Max
at the same time, then an Athlon 64 X2 would be an excellent choice.
