I am guessing cause of the wording that some sectors were not readable, maybe even the HD firmware was removing bad sectors & could not read the old ones to copy over to the new sectors that were replacing the bad old ones.
I have done that too many times myself got something new & waited till I opened & tested it out & lost lots of money that way. Like I have a new DVD & CD writer that has never writen anything yet LoL.
