I remove those pads with a razar blade even on new CPU's & use my Artic Silver 2 compound thou I think they are up to number 5 version now.
If your problem is the CPU with hot spots the longer you run it that way the more damage you are doing to the CPU. Basically a terminal thermal meltdown.
