if it is a Dell drive it might have hidden partition and you cannot see it in windows. If you purchased the drive somewhere else - e.g. Best Buy, then there won't be any hidden partition with complementary system files.

On that hidden partition are usually also the Dell Diagnostics that you can launch from the POST prompt.



Another trick is to store the serial number in the BIOS chip.
