A lot of it is going to reduce to personal prefernce, I think. And of course it is good to actually HAVE a preference, and not just be one of those dumb kids (I'm sure you've met a few of the type somewhere) who goes to the audio shop and spends all of his money on the largest thing he can possibly fit in the trunk and *maybe* a new head unit, and then thinks his sound system is great because it loosens bolts in other people's cars -- never mind that the indside of the car doesn't sound any better than a bowling alley basment

Ports are great for some setups, particularly lower-power designs where the port resonance and the reduced damping on the driver allow more sound pressure to be extracted (and in a car, regardless of the available power, there's enough other noise from the road and engine that it doesn't matter as much). But that reduced damping can also "fuzz" the bass a bit. A sealed enclosure, properly dimensioned, gives the greatest accuracy but you have to use a lot of power to get the 'kick'
