Possibly the battery, it's the original. But know when I reinstalled winders it didn't detect the modem on the first go, finally detected it and got it installed and everything was wonderfull until it shut down in that boot. When I say shut down it went click and turned the machine off. Never had one actually do that before. It was like the power went off but it didn't.
Modem fits in there tight, wasn't loose, but will recheck it and clean the contacts. Could be a BIOS problem.
I didn't FDisk the MBR on it. Had to install winders on my 800MZ machine and then move it back to this machine. Becaause it's an old MB out of a Compaq, the Bios is modified and it's one of those gems that when you stick a boot disk in it you get
"invalid system disk". I've encounted one of those before, they are a PITA. This one fortunately would let me stick a HDD with winders on it in and it would boot to it.
Somehow I suspect # 4 in your choices.
It booted maybe 15 times before this glitch came about. Now it's got a boot problem.
