Old K62-500 computer. Somwthing is screwy. Wiped it, reinstalled WIN98SE, everything went AOK, had rebooted it several times. Suddenly in a boot it poof shut off before it got to winders. Rebooted everything ok, went to winders, it had reset the display settings, eveything else ok. Sent it home with client, told him to see what happened. It didn't want to boot up, he restarted it, it went to winders, display settings reset again, went to connect to the net and it's lost the modem. Huh? Just had the damn thing online this afternoon over here.

MB is a GA5-SMM, compaq modified BIOS, intregated sound and video. Been a good little MB so far. Wondering if the onboard video is beginning to fail? With it losing the modem (only PCI card on it) is the PCI going out? Video runs in PCI Mode.

It's coming back tomorrow. Gut tells me it's a hardware problem someplace and my first thought is the PCI is beginning to go out on the board.

What's your thoughts? He brought this to me because it was goofy with the display settings, but he had tons of adware/spyware and a virus on it so I wiped winders to see what gave. Seemed to be ok until it quit in that one boot. But was ok on the reset and then not at his place. I told him the OS problems shouldn't have caused the display problems and we might be dealing with a hardware or driver glitch someplace. But this is a fresh install of the SIS 530 drivers so that should have fixed a corrupted driver glitch if there was one.
HDD drive tested out ok with Maxblast. Fresh install of the sound drivers also.

Your thoughts appreciated.

All this and crunch time for taxes....and the two biggest returns I do are here under the gun, missing 1/2 the info I need. Aggggh!
