Does it sound like I did anything wrong on my first format attempt? I am new to SATA, but it seemed like I did it right. Searched for downloads using the system's service tag on dell's site, downloaded the intel sata driver disk creator, hit f6, loaded the ahci version (not raid) because that's what device manager had listed before the format. Deleted the C:\ partition, as well as some un-lettered FAT partition and a F:\ FAT32 partition that I wasn't sure why Dell had them there. Shouldn't be any harm in getting rid of them though I wouldn't think, Dell tech agreed.
Created new partition and format ntfs and then it all went downhill.
