Actually the drivers are loaded from config.sys. The first scans your mobo for available USB controlers, then checks for connected storage devices to the found controllers. The second driver just assigns any detected device a drive letter.

I read below the suggestion to upgrade to SE, and didn't realize that you were running the 1st edition. With the DOS driver I'm using the 98 version doesn't matter if booting Windows after DOS has loaded the drivers but I agree with the SE upgrade recommedation. It's by far more stable and has USB support, but finding that driver for your scanner may still be a problem.
