I just experimented this weekend with a pair of fresnel lenses this weekend (a pair of reading magnifiers from OfficeMax, ended up taking them back as they weren't powerful enough).

I reached similar conclusions -- first, you need a really bright CRT/TFT device, and second, it's still dim all things considered

Be easier just to save up 800 bucks and buy a low-end video projector. Those aren't very bright either, but it would at least match the projected CRT and be a whole lot more compact.
