Could be bad...could be something else, ocassionally you'll encounter wierd compatibility problems between some ethernet cards and some switches (wouldn't be surprising given a card that old...)

You can find Ethernet II card kits on eBay starting from around USD$5, but you could just pick up a new 10/100 adapter for less than $15 (like this one):

Note that Linksys (second link, scroll down a ways) still makes cards with dongles if for some reason the fixed-form jack gets in your way.
