I assume that you tried that HD on the secondary channel also ?.
If it is the HD spinrite 5 might fix it, along shot thou.
I have seen a HD as soon as it tried to read a sector it frooze right there, it had about 12 of these bad spots. I computed the sector & remove them by hand & had to go back as some were 2 & 3 clusters bad in a row.
