Just got my retail copy of Doom3 last night, which contains 3 cds btw. After fiddling with it a bit, some of my thoughts are as follows:
1. in terms of human modelling and light effect, by far the most realistic computer game yet. In contrast, Farcry is mostly renowned for its revolutionary landscape modelling. I haven't yet reached a place in doom3 where outdoors environment can be compared head to head with Farcry.

2. my main specs:
AMD athlon 2700+ xp,
Abit kx7-333 mobo,
1GB 333mhz DRR ram,
Radeon 9700 pro 128mb,
2x120 GB seagate HD,
creative SB 5.1,

Sure, they are not top-notch nowadays. But by no means are they slouch. Using Fraps, in 1078x768 res with medium detail setting, very often the fps goes below 20. By extrapolation, even the top-of-line system of today (ie. fx-53, p4ee, with latest Nvdia and ATI offerings) can be expected to deliver no more than 30-40 fps in those scenes with a modest level of detail.

Conclusion: Doom3 may well be a game ahead of its time. One really needs a 4ghz+ cpu and video card a couple of generations in the future to feast upon its full glory.
