I installed a MCX-4000 and 80mm fan last week on a P4 2.53. The old heatsink/fan had a small power connector that went to the mobo. The new fan doesn't use this plug.

So when I install the new heatsink the small white plastic piece that sticks up (where the intel fan plugs into the mobo) went UNDER the new heatsink. So no matter how hard you tighten the screws on the swiftech there was a small gap between the heatsink and cpu!!!

Results where exactly as you describe. I had to remove the mobo and look at the heatsink from the side with a flashlight to find this one

After reinstalling the heatsink (with artic silver III) the system runs FSB 140 for 560Mhz and the cpu idles at 2.66Ghz @ 44C, full load 49C. This cpu could easily do 3Ghz but I'm only using PC2100 (dual channel DDR/512MB per channel, i7205) and don't want to push the RAM above 140Mhz.

Good luck
