I don't quite get what you're saying in that statement, can you clarify?

This is simple heat transfer and thermodynamics at work. Normally, when the heatsink is properly mounted and thermal pasted has been applied prudently (VERY thin layer), the thermal interface between the heatsink and the heatplate/heatspreader will be FAR more efficient than low-volume airflow against the plate/spreader.

I still have good reason to believe that while your PII modification got the desired result, it did so only by inadvertently solving a different problem.
