Are you saying you drilled a hole through the heatsink and exposed the die itself? Is this a K6, a PIII, or a P4 (i.e. with a heatspreader)?

Cooling capability is a loose function of air volume per unit surface area of the cooling media, and the heat transfer capabilities of that media.

If I'm understanding what you did correctly -- and you do that on a fast Athlon with no heat spreader -- it will most likely burn.
