Ditto what the others are saying. Put the money toward a mb/cpu/mem upgrade and enjoy the overall boost in system performance, then do the video card next time around.

You won't see any gain from the new video (your framerates are almost certainly CPU bound and games with DX8.1+ features won't run on that system) and you risk running into the AGP voltage compatibility problems Ben mentioned. Although, in your case -- new card in an old board -- I think those problems are limited mostly to AGP 1.0 motherboards including all Intel LX and some older Skt7.
