If you're even halfway serious about that, go talk to a course counselor at a local community college. I've had several friends go that route on a "2/3" schedule or similar (two weekdays of classes, three weekdays to work at your job or whatever).

You can get your general ed-type requirements out of the way and pay for it as you go, and then decide if you want to finish a degree at the community college, or transfer to a university.

The advantage is that if you plan well, you can get a good start toward a degree program without having to take out any loans (although you should fill out the "Federal Application for Student Financial Aid" -- FAFSA -- paperwork every year, just in case).

Then if you do decide to carry it through, and have maintained a decent GPA, you're in a very good position to apply elsewhere (and possibly receive more scholarship or grant-based aid money).
