in short:
dsl is a point to point connection from your home to the provider. and you're alone on you cable until you reacht the providers router - after that, you share bandwidth but usually, backbones are pretty fast.
cablemodem: you are connected to the same cable your neighbors are. since you are limited in max bandwidth over a single line, all users share this bwdth.
if you have 100mbit on a line, you have a 1mbit contract and 200 users downloading at the same time -> 0.5mbit are left for you...
