Conversely, I have never built a new Intel machine (I've rebuilt a couple old ones), but my most recent pair use Athlons

What are you planning to do with the old board/memory/CPU? If they're just going into a scrap pile, pull the RDRAM, buy an i850E-based motherboard and a Northwood P4, and go home happy.

OTOH if you're building the new machine from the ground up and just re-using your peripheral components, I would build an AthlonXP system, and apply the difference toward a copy of Windows 2000 (A/V work on Win98? Sure, it can be done, but...)

And, if cost is no object, you could pick up an MPX motherboard, two Athlon MPs, and 512MB of DDR-SDRAM for ~$600. Add Windows 2000 and make your system a dual-boot with your current Win98 copy, and you would have one screaming workstation
