If she is hooking up the k/m right then check the inside of the plugs & make sure no pins are bent over shorting out the power or ports, even something forein could be jammed in there to, less likely but maybe a pin is missing. Did you test the new setup with her m/k ?, did you have her try reversing the plugs ? .
What CPU was that ? one of those hot running K6's ouch.
No H/S compound is not good & could be trouble, in fact that should be a problem now & with age.
