Find out, too, if she is somehow stretching her mouse & keyboard cords unnaturally. If they are pulling tight on the ends, she could be breaking wires in the cables, and/or gradually yanking the solder connecions lose on the ports.

If you haven't already, you might flip her old dead board over, plug a mouse or keyboard into each port, and observe the solder connections with a magnifying glass while gently wiggling the connectors.

Hairline solder fractures are tricky to spot, but with a magnifier and a good fluorescent light source, they can be picked out without too much difficulty.
