From what I have picked up:

Dell: Good equipment, quality of support varies depending on who you talk to.

Sony: Great equipment, but if it breaks out of warranty, good luck getting it fixed.

Toshiba: Good stuff, parts and accessories can be expensive and/or hard to find.

IBM: Good stuff, a bit pricey. Service and support -- no idea.

HP, Gateway...meh. DualHead, no idea. Compaq? Their Armada-brand business stuff is good, the Presario home-user equipment tends to be junk.
