And yes, a typical LED can run on a variety of lower supply voltages with the correct resistor. Much over the 20-30V range, though, is asking for trouble (IIRC. The point is, they cannot run on high-voltage supplies.)

You can run them from low-voltage AC *or* DC, but because they are diodes (uni-directional), they will only be half as bright on AC.
