the onboard LAN works just fine but for a "permanent" connection, you want to have a firewall and I mean a hardware firewall before you even get to any of your computers. A hardware-based NAT-Switch / router with a WAN and a hidden LAN side is available from DLINK, LinkSys etc for some $70-80 with much better performance than any software firewall.

Otherwise, here are a few pointers for a point-to-point connection (at least how it used to be)
