ie without use of a switch, you will need what is known as a crossover cable. What it does, as its name suggests, is cross the send wires from one NIC over to the revieve wires of the other NIC and vice versa, whereas a standard piece of CAT 5 will run the wires straight through without a crossover because the hub/switch/whatever takes care of that part itself.

The only thing is that some programs don't like this setup. My sister's PCs, for example, wouldn't let the computer which had the modem dial up unless the other PC opened an internet app first.
