A "crossed ethernet cable" is different from a standard cable in that some of the wires are swapped, and yeah, it allows two machines to plug in back-to-back. Any computer vendor should know what it is if you ask for it.

Otherwise, you minimally need two standard ethernet cables, AND either a hub/switch, or a "crossed coupler" that swaps the correct wires
