xerox C8 printer and ink levels

I just picked up a Xerox C8 fer free from my sister in law but it no printy print. She doesn't know which cartridge is empty or the last time the cartridges were changed. Each cartridge is $20 CDN so that would run me $80 for each one. It's cheaper for me to buy a new printer. Anyone know how I can find the ink levels? I know the C8 has software that "determines" the ink level but I've scoured the Xerox site and they only have XP drivers, no software and of course my sis can't find the install CD.
