It depends on how often you use the system. Most wear-and-tear damage occurs during starting/stopping cycles; steady-state operation causes very litte.

Of course, a typical machine -- depending if it is OEM or custom built -- dissipates power on the order of about 400W (OEM with a 200W power supply) to 800W (custom rig with a 400W power supply). So if you leave it on, you pay for a little extra electricity.
