There is a .NET runtime project for unixes running. I think it's called mojo or something like that.

Personally, I learned C first, then went over to C++ which make a lot of things easier by its object oriented aproach. I am now in the process of learning Java.

C# and the whole .NET is quite powerful. But limited to windows platforms as of yet. The great thing about Java is, that many programs are open source. Most of the .NET stuff will be closed source, I think...

I can not give you a technical yes or no to C#. My personal opinion is: go Java because it's so big already. It offers you so many possibilities and extensions... more than you could dream of in your wildest dreams.

If you want to stay somewhere near the hardware with your programming, I'd recommend learning assembler first, then C. And later on, you could go C++, but you don't need this in hardware close programming...
