A router does connect two subnets to each other. In your house, the router should be the standart gateway for all your machines.

So, the cable company has no way (or shouldn't be able -> firewall) to determine how many machines are in your subnet. Because it does NAT from the inside to the internet. I guess, that's the reason why they don't want you to use a router.

Just keep on using that thing. They can't dictate you what kind of network components your home network may consist of...
