For laptop hard drives, you CAN use it on a desktop with an adapter that divides the IDE output from the power cables, and gives you standard PC connectors for both.
I have never heard of such a device for a laptop floppy but it couldn't hurt to check around. OTOH you can easily pick up a brand new 3.5" floppy for $10-15 these days.
Save that laptop floppy, though, someday you may find somebody with a dead one. For a half-hour's work and the replacement drive, you could pick up $30...unless the someone is a cute girl, of course, in which case you could try to pick up her
