For best laptop for the money? Dell. Compaq's Armada, the business laptops, are OK. New Thinkpads are also OK. (Stay away from any IBM at 233mhz or lower). They are software "buggy".
IMHO...Avoid Gateway Solo's, Winbook and HP.
