You say that scandisk was causing problems, logic suggests it may be that the shut down & power off process was faulty.

Assuming that you used the [START] > {Shut Down} method (rather than kick the plug ) it might be that a loose connection or Mobo chipset or even bios glitch was cutting off mid process.

alternatively what OS ? - WinME & earlier has advanced power management problems and with fast chips needs an update from MS to prevent overly swift shutdown.

Also have you double checked the mobo manual against the leads and swapped out switch leads just in case ? And the mains power supply lead.
