I also read somewhere (Seagate's site I think?), that one of the important things for a hard drive to have, when used for video editing, is a large onboard cache (>2mb). So if you don't get Raid, at least get a decent hard drive with that.
As for mobo, I would recommend, a manufacturer with good tech support, given what my experience with the ASUS A-holes has tought me so far.
