The biggest problem I've ever had was that I had to download the latest Indeo codecs to get CivII (from 1996) running properly. Never played The Sims, though.

Service Pack 2 is a must, even if the whole download is 100 MB. Sucks on a dialup, might actually be quicker to mail a CD. I know for sure that it fixed a memory leak I'd see while gaming.

There are instructions at the link to boost the priority of a game, There is also a program you can use to do this, but I can't remember what it's called and I can't find it at teh moment.
