was short about two video cards and a soundcard,
so I solved 2/3 of my problem when a box arrived from Newegg with an SBLive 5.1 OEM and a Radeon 7500 64-DDR.

So I installed the Radeon, and sure enough, the display quality is gorgeous and my games crash

Actually, it was just a known-issue in HalfLife, I discovered. One quick patch later and all is happy again
