If you cannot get anything deeper than 7-3/4 in there, you are pretty much out of luck for a P4 or any recent Athlon board AFAIK.
Some older Super7 stuff might fit in there and a few early Athlon boards (like the SlotA MSI 6195 K7-Pro) might make it in, but you would have to upgrade the power supply.
My suggestion is that you get a new case, power supply, motherboard, CPU, memory, and heatsink, then transfer over your hard drive, CD-ROM, videocard, soundcard, and modem/NIC/whatever. Alternatively, you may be able to find an older i440BX board that meets your form factor requirements, and just swap your existing components onton it (and upgrade to a PIII later).
