Its is common with that IBM HD that that is a sign of a soon to be dead drive. But I have seen this on other computer without a bad HD with bad drivers, a bad CPU, even zip drivers.
Bad clusters can also cause this problem (many sectors tied together & some unusable so you lose the whole cluster). I assume a bad chipset could cause the effect to or a misidentified HD or & a virus.

Anyways that HD does have a bad history I just figured you should know that this can be caused by other means.
