1. Do you already have a network in place with an IP addressing scheme? If so, what is one of the IP address' on your network.
2. Are you using a Windows NT domain/workgroup environment?
3. Do you have a router connecting the network to the internet?
4. How many nodes will be hooked up to this network?

Example:

Using a Windows NT domain environment:

1. setup DHCP scope IP range 10.0.0.1 - 10.0.0.255 in DHCP manager. This gives you a Class A network and will allow for thousands of nodes.
2. create an exclusion scope of 10.0.0.1 - 10.0.0.20 (this will allow the non-dhcp capable printers and any PDC/BDC or stand-alone servers to be configured with a static IP address.
3. your subnet mask will be 255.255.255.0 (check out the link for subnet calculators.)
3. setup each client for DHCP and configure them to logon to the domain with Client for Microsoft Networks.

Some people prefer to use workgroup configurations instead of domain configs, but the central mangement features of using a domain FAR outways the benefits of using a workgroup. You can centralize file sharing, create logon scripts, manage your printers etc from one centralized area. I have worked with both configs and find working with domains much easier.

Regarding a default gateway, if you get a router for internet access (cheap ones can run around $70-$80 and they are much easier than dealing with Proxy server software, especially that crap that is MS Proxy 2 although I haven't used ISA server with WIN2K) you use the IP address of the router as your default gateway. The gateway allows subnets to talk to each other.

Hope this helps.

FTL for a really good subnet site.
