Ludicrous,
It does not spin up. I tried the tapping thing a few weeks back and got the BIOS to recognize the drive but WinXP couldn't get it online. The motor probably stopped by then or something. It does seem to be a motor problem or something close. It's not an old drive as the system is pretty new (one year old drive... gotten pretty good use for the last 6 months). At any rate, the tapping hasn't gotten the drive online. I just want to get it up once in all honesty so I could copy my data off of it. I already have a replacement for it.
As for the other poster who has said they've lost more hard drives recently than over several years, I absolutely agree. I still have hard drives from the 528 GB and under days that have NEVER given me a problem and they were in use constantly. Even my old 1 and 2GB drives are stellar. It's when they got to about 4-6 GB range where I have had CONSTANT breaks it seems. Western Digital being the main culprits. They break so much I've sweared them off for good. That's the drive that has broken by the way and it came with the system (wasn't my choice).
Thank You everyone for your help. I'm not sure where to turn from here but I'd like to get the data off somehow.
