most games don't require DNS. They connect to a master server which provides a list of server IP's, and the game connects using the IP.

When surfing the web, you send a request for "www.domainname.com", this has to go to the DNS server first to resolve to an IP, then the request is sent to that IP. If you have a crappy DNS server, it will take longer for this process to happen.
