I too have/had the same problem.
Make sure you have tcp/ip enabled along with file sharing. (I know it's a security issue but you have to since XP couldn't get IPX/SPX to work alone even with netbios).
One of the biggest time savers you can do is to map the network drives you use the most. (In "my computer").
XP will save the settings and reconnect them if they are there. Your boots will still take some time but you won't have to go to the network to bring up your network drives. Just "my computer".
BIG time savings!
PS....make sure you log on using the same log in as your XP machine. This too saves XP time in sending out network requests on a peer to peer.
